NEWS August 2012:

Since the last Avonside House Trust newsletter in December 2011 there have been a number of developments for the residents and staff.

Earthquake Recovery

Repairs to the sewerage problem at Lychgate Close have been completed, and the portaloo has been removed (at last!). Another piece of good news is that the residents who lost property during the earthquakes have now received their insurance payments. However, repairs to the residences and grounds are yet to be completed, and permanent power and telephone supply at Lychgate Close are still to be negotiated. These issues will take some time to resolve but we will keep you up to date with any developments.

Karin received an Earthquake Award from the Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker in recognition of services as a result of the Christchurch earthquakes. This is obviously a reflection on the team support also. Compliments also go to our residents who were and remain extremely brave. The Residents’ earthquake memorial barbeque was held on 22nd February 2012.

Property Development

Various property improvements to Te Orewai Place are planned. These improvements will involve converting three existing garages into a purpose built new kitchen and dining room, and a new Manager’s office. These developments are expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Residents’ Activities

On Saturday June 23rd the Residents’ Mid-Winter Party was held at the St Chads Church. This was a very enjoyable experience for all. The residents’ holiday to the North Island will occur in September. It is planned to visit Rotorua, Te Awamutu, Tokoroa, Palmerston North, and Wellington, from which the residents and staff will return on the Cook Strait Ferry and train. The visits to Te Awamutu and Tokoroa will be significant because the residents will visit the residential providers who accommodated them during their evacuation to the North Island following the February 2011 earthquake. At this stage, the trip to Australia is postponed indefinitely.

Annual General Meeting

The Avonside House Trust Annual General Meeting will be held on 25th August at 10.30am at the MHERC Office, 403a Worcester Street, Linwood.
